The ROAM-X Project, initiated by UNESCO, focuses on assessing and improving the state of internet development globally based on the principles of human rights, openness, accessibility, and multi-stakeholder participation. Here are four key facts about the project:-
The ROAM-X Project employs a comprehensive framework consisting of 303 indicators that evaluate national internet environments. These indicators assess various aspects of internet governance and development, ensuring alignment with the ROAM principles
The project is currently active in over 40 countries, including Namibia, which became the first country in Southern Africa to launch a national assessment of the Internet Universality Indicators. This highlights the project's global reach and its commitment to fostering internet universality across diverse contexts
The "X" in ROAM-X signifies the inclusion of cross-cutting issues such as gender equality, children's rights, and sustainable development. This aspect aims to ensure that internet policies are inclusive and address the needs of various demographic groups.
One of the project’s goals is to leverage digital technologies to enhance local economies, particularly in creative sectors like music. This is especially relevant for Small Island Developing States (SIDS), where connectivity challenges can hinder economic growth
Emma Theofelus, Namibia's Minister of Information and Communication Technology, stated: “The launch of ROAM-X serves to inform other UN member nations that Namibia found the Internet Universality Assessment Framework as fit for purpose and embrace it as sharing good practices by voluntarily assessing the internet in the country across various cross-cutting issues at a national level”.
This quote underscores Namibia's commitment to using the ROAM-X framework as a model for improving its internet ecosystem while promoting best practices for other nations.
